Whether you make or buy a dessert to enjoy at home, nothing tops off a sweet treat better than fresh homemade whipped cream. Whipped cream is easy to make at home and requires only a few ingredients. It is cheaper to make whipped cream at home than it is to buy whipped dessert toppings in the store- and the fresh flavor can't be beat!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

For enough whipped cream to feed 4 people you will need:
    1 cup heavy whipping cream
    1 tsp powdered (confectioners) sugar
    1 tsp pure vanilla extract
    Electric mixer

Several hours before serving dessert place the mixing bowl and beaters in the fridge with the heavy cream- chilling the bowl and beaters make it easier to achieve a better consistency of whipped cream.

  2. Step 2

A few minutes before serving dessert remove bowl, beaters and cream from fridge and sugar and vanilla from the pantry. Add all of the cream to the chilled bowl and start beating on slow speed. Add sugar and vanilla while cream is being beaten at a low speed to avoid it spilling. Gradually increase the speed of the mixer making sure that cream does not splatter out of the bowl. You should eventually be mixing the cream on the highest speed setting. As you increase the speed of the mixer the cream will begin to thicken as air is incorporated into the cream. Beat until you reach desired cream consistency. Use a rubber spatula to scrape down the sides of the bowl occasionally to make sure all of the cream is whipped.

  3. Step 3

To serve use a rubber spatula to dollop desired amount of whipped cream on dessert.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can add more sugar or vanilla to taste if you like a sweeter whipped cream
  • The vanilla extract can be substituted with other flavoring extracts (ie maple, orange, lemon) or sweet liqueurs to achieve a different flavor profile
  • Do not make whipped cream more than a few minutes in advance of serving as it will begin to deflate after a while
