This article explains an easy way to make a dog costume for Mardi Gras or for another party.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • pants or heavy tights and a long-sleeved clingy shirt, socks and shoes, all of the same color--brown, black, grey, white, or another color of a dog.
  • about a yard of furry fabric that is a contrasting dog color.
  • a pair of mittens (or trace your hands in a mitten shape on paper and use it)
  • elastic headband or knit hat that matches the color of the furry fabric
  • safety pins
  • a marker for tracing onto the fabric
  • scissors
  • sewing needle and thread (optional if not using safety pins)
  • brown or black theatrical makeup
  • a short necklace or a real dog collar for your neck.
  • doggy bone or toy
  • optional: leash, dog dish, dog tags, doggie treats
  1. Step 1

Make the tail: Cut along one side of the fabric a length of fabric that is at least 12 inches long and 4 inches wide. Fold in half lengthwise and pin it shut. I should now be about 2 inches wide. About 6 inches before one end, shape the tail using a scissors to make it a narrow point at the end. Glue or sew it together and pin or sew it onto the seat of the pants. It should be shorter than the floor and long enough to grab from the front.

  2. Step 2

Make the ears and paws: For the ears, trace a pair of shoes on the back of the fabric and cut them out. Don't get marker on the shoes. Pin them onto the hat or headband to cover your ears. For the paws, trace either mittens or a paper in the shape of a mitten on 2 sides for each hand and glue or sew them together to wear. If they are light in color, draw toes on them with a dark marker.

  3. Step 3

Make the spots: With the remaining fabric, cut some spots. They can be large or small. Glue, sew or pin them onto your shirt and pants in random places, mostly on the sides and back, making sure that they don't gape.

  4. Step 4

For a collar: Either buy one or wear a choker necklace. If you want, buy a dog tag and leash and a dog bone, toy or dish and fill it with some dog chow (chocolate Captain Crunch) to carry.

  5. Step 5

Make up your face like a dog: Draw an upside down triangle with rounded edges around the end of your nose with dark make-up and fill it in. Make "chops" by drawing a line from the edges of your mouth curved up the sides of your face to your cheekbones. Fill in some whiskers by making dots on your cheeks. Do this last-minute. It smears.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you're going with a partner, have him or her carry a poop bag and some doggie treats for you to do tricks. The treats can be cookies in the shape of a dog bone.
  • Behave like a dog and walk around with your tongue out if you want. Beg and bark also. Wag your tail. It all adds to the image.
  • Take the make-up along to touch up.
