Things You'll Need:
- discipline
- dedication
- possibly medicine
-
Step 1
The first step to quitting is wanting to quit. If you don't want to don't try to because you are more likely not mentally ready.
-
Step 2
Set a quit date and begin preparing yourself for this day. Slowly begin weaning yourself off by decreasing the number of cigarettes you smoke a day up to the quit day. Only smoke when you feel you have to during the weaning process. This will make your quit day easier.
-
Step 3
Make the weaning process like a game. See how long you can go without a smoke and try to increase the amount of time until your hardly smoking. If you can go a few hours between cigarettes your not far from quitting.
-
Step 4
If you make it a whole day without a smoke you can quit as most of the toxins have cleansed from the body. Smoking is more mentally addictive than physically. The only thing nicotine withdraws do is make you moody, physical sickness is very unusual.
-
Step 5
Substitute your after meal cigarette with gum or candy. Chewing will cure the oral fixation from not smoking.
-
Step 6
Surround yourself with people that don't smoke as this will increase your chances of relapsing.
-
Step 7
When your quit day has arrived be ready for some moody times. The best way to quit is cold turkey as you are less likely to relapse with this quitting method. Where as others are not as easy.
-
Step 8
Try supplements or over the counter quitting aids. Patches, gum, mints etc., but beware, these are only substituting the addiction as you still are using just not smoking. Most people that use these quitting supplements often get addicted to them.
-
Step 9
If you must there are medicines your doctor can prescribe like Chantix. This should be your last resort.
-
Step 10
Join a support group. It sounds silly but it will help you realize your not the only one with problems quitting. It might even help you learn new coping strategies.
-
Step 11
Avoid stress as much as possible as this is the number one trigger to relapsing. Again, it sounds silly but its true. Plan on taking a few days off work or school.
-
Step 12
Again, driving is another trigger to smoke, so keep candy or gum around at all times.
-
Step 13
Think of how much money you waste buying smokes and keep the money in a jar at your house. Physical reminders are great reinforcements. Watch how fast the jar fills and look at it as a reward for quitting aside from the many health rewards.
-
Step 14
Don't drink as this is a trigger for most smokers. Plan on not going out until you feel you can without temptation because once you have a drink relapsing is not far behind.
