Things You'll Need:
- Hardwood floor cleaner (see step 1)
- Household broom, soft bristles
- Clean sponge mop
- Oil-based furniture polish
- Dry cloth
-
Step 1
Go to a hardware store and look in their flooring section for a cleaner made by an actual hardwood floor manufacturer. These companies know how to care for wood much better than those who make the typical grocery store brands.
-
Step 2
Give your floor a good sweeping. Don't forget any edges or corners.
-
Step 3
Follow the manufacturer's instructions for mopping your floor with the cleaning product. Some suggest a dry mop, others a damp mop. If you use a damp mop, remember that damp doesn't mean wet; you must squeeze as much water out of the mop as you can. Always limit your hardwood floor's exposure to water!
-
Step 4
Apply the furniture polish to a clean cloth (not directly to the floor). Buff the floor by rubbing the cloth in a rapid circular motion. Reapply the polish to the cloth every couple of feet or whenever you notice it isn't making the floor shine. This last step can be rather labor-intensive, but it's worth it. Your hardwood floor will look shiny and new again.
