A lodge, by its very nature is already rustic and typically has a natural, unfussy look thanks to exposed wood and bare hardwood floors. Rustic style should not look forced, and using mismatched accessories is acceptable, as long as the objects stay within your muted color scheme. Instructions

    • 1

Choose a general rustic decor style, or a rustic style that is also Country, Primitive, Colonial or Western. Any of these styles work in a rustic lodge. Country style uses blues and warm reds, as does Colonial. Western incorporates cowboy and cowgirl themes as well as Southwestern accessories. Primitive relies mainly on wrought iron, wood and texture created with woven fabrics.

Select furniture suited for comfortable sitting and napping. Rustic style furniture should invite you to sneak in a nap during the middle of the day. Leather couches with throws, or plush suede couches with ottomans work well. Add side tables made from hickory, cut tree trunks or other natural-looking, raw wood.

    • 3

Work with a muted palette, matching the decor style you picked. Earth colors including stone grays, earthy browns and cloudy blues are calming and subtle. Warm reds and tans work for Colonial style and for Southwestern style. Pine greens pair with the natural wood colors for a Rocky Mountain rustic style or choose a cactus green for a Southwestern style.

Accessorize the hardwood floor with plush throw rugs. The rugs should be deep enough to sit on comfortably. Mix and match different colors and shapes of rugs. Floor coverings with animal print motifs or quilted designs are ideal for the rustic cabin.

    • 5

Decorate with wrought iron candle holders, picture frames or chandeliers. Animal-themed accessories also add to a rustic decor, in the form of antler chandeliers or animal print fabric wall hangings. Keep lighting soft and indirect, with the light facing up towards the ceiling rather than directly down into the room.

    • 6

Create an overall rustic style in the lodge by carrying from room to room, by repeating colors and textures throughout the lodge. Break up a pair of chairs or a pair of matching wrought iron frames and use the items in more than one room. Use matching floor rugs of the same color or style in different rooms.

Tips & Warnings

  • Give the rustic style a Southwestern flair by using colors including desert tans, adobe and cactus greens. Patriotic colors also can be incorporated into a rustic decor.

  • Do not stage the room to make it look formal--cozy is the key. Only use throw pillows if they add comfort to the seating area.
