How to Make Candle Holders From Boxes
Hot wax can ruin the surface of most furniture. The original intent for candle holders was to prevent this disaster by catching the wax. Now, candle holders have both functional and decorative uses. Those who have a love for crafts and recycling can create attractive holders from sturdy boxes.
Things You'll Need
- Votive cups
- Tape measure or ruler
- Shadow box
- Drill
- Spade bit
- Unfinished wooden box
- Paint or stain
- Glue
- Glass gems
- Candles
- Wooden tissue box cover
- Hanging hooks
- Hammer
- Nails

Use a Shadow Box

Measure your votive cups. Standard-sized votive cups are about 1 1/2 inches in diameter.

Stand the shadow box on a flat surface. Measure the side resting on the surface and mark the spots where you want your votive cups to be.

Attach the spade bit to the drill. Drill the holes about 1/4- to 1/2-inch deep for your votive cups.

Wipe the box and place the votive candles in the holes. Hang the shadow box on a wall.
Decorate a Wooden Box

Purchase a small, unfinished, wood box. You can find these, in a variety of shapes, at a craft store.

Finish the box as you wish. You can sand it and then apply a stain and polish or paint the box in the color of your choice. You can also leave it plain. Wait for the paint or polish to dry.

Apply glue to the flat surface of a glass gem and stick the gem to the box. Repeat this for as many glass gems as you wish to apply to the box in a pattern of your choice. Allow the glue to dry.

Place a candle inside the candle holder and set it where you wish.
Convert a Tissue Box

Place a wooden tissue cover on a flat surface, with the hole towards you. This will become the back of the candle holder and it is this side that will be hung from the wall.

Attach two hanging hooks to the top edge of the box. Follow the directions included with the hooks. Put one hook at each corner.

Select a spot on the wall from which to hang your candle holder. Hammer nails into the wall at the appropriate spots for the hooks on the box.

Hang your candle holder on the wall. Place candles on top of the box or inside the box.
