How to Make Moccassins
Moccasins are a shoe that originated in Native American culture and are typically made from leather or deer skin. Making your own moccasins is a simple process if you have a basic knowledge of sewing. You can design your moccasin any way you'd like by adding drawings on the vamp, or beads or fur trimming along the edges. One of the first things you need to do is find a moccasin pattern at your local crafts store or online.
Things You'll Need
- Leather or similar material
- Artificial sinew
- Leather needle
- Fleece (for lining)
- Fur (optional)

1
Place the pattern pieces for each foot on the leather and trace with a pen or pencil. Begin to cut out the patterns carefully.
-
2
Trace the lining patterns on the fleece and then cut to make your lining. Make sure to pin the pattern onto two layers of fabric and that a 1/4" seam is included in the pattern.

3
Sew the leather by using an overcast stitch, which is done over a foundation thread to form the edges of the moccasin. Make sure to create a knot at the beginning and end of each seam. Carefully stitch the two pieces together with stitches that are about 1/8" apart and 1/8" deep (See References).
-
4
Sew the vamp to the bottom of the moccasin using a sewing machine for best results. Make sure bottom and vamp line up perfectly.
-
5
Sew in the fleece lining and make the heel. Make any alterations as needed. Once you are finished you have the option to further decorate your moccasin by trimming it with fur or adding design to the vamp.
