How to Request a Promotion

How to Request a Promotion thumbnail
Get that Promotion!

Asking for a promotion can feel intimidating but if it's something you truly want to go after, the only one who is going to get you there is yourself. Believe in your abilities and follow this advice and you could land the promotion of your dreams.

Instructions

    • 1
      Write promotion proposal statements

Write down two statements. One of how you would spend your first 90 days when promoted to this position and the second write down how you would help your replacement fill your position. This will arm you with the knowledge they will expect of you and may even quiz you on. Write it up nicely (typed) in the case your employer asks for it in writing.

    • 2
Be direct when requesting a promotion

Be direct. Don't expect your employer to know you want the promotion, you must state clearly that you are available to take the promotion and that you know you'd be the best choice. Don't ask for it and don't tell them you 'think' or 'feel' you'd be the right choice. Be direct, clear and confident.

    • 3
Appeal to your employers priorities when trying to get promoted.

Appeal to your employers priorities when you are trying to get a promotion. Knowing your employer and where their company sits in a variety of areas will benefit you greatly. Example: if your boss is concerned over finances, tell them how you would be able to help them cut costs. BE the person they want to fill the position for your desired promotion.

    • 4
Be grateful but never overly submissive.

Be grateful for your job and the opportunities you have been given within their company but never act like a submissive fool or they may take you for someone who wouldn't be capable of standing on their own two feet without a need for supervision or accolades.

BE the ideal candidate for promotion.

Long before the promotion becomes available, express your desire to hold the position one day. When appropriate, express this thought as often as possible without going overboard and making it seem that you have an odd obsession with it.

There once was a man who was interviewed in a lower level position. The employer asked him what position he wanted. He confidently stated that, one day, he had full intentions of sitting where he was sitting right now interviewing someone else. The employer laughed and hired him on the spot. Eventually, he did get that position.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be calm and confident at all times but not so much that you stop being open minded.

  • Always credit others who've helped you rather than taking sole credit. It's a strength, not a weakness, to be part of a winning team.

  • Never bad mouth your co-workers in an attempt to 'win' the promotion as if it were a battlefield. It is not. It's simply proving who is the best for the position.
