Riding the NYC subway really isn't all that hard. The difficulty comes from not knowing how to navigate it. Once you know where you are and where you're going, riding the NYC Subway is almost too easy.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • NYC Subway Map (Optional)
  1. Step 1

(Plan your route.) Before hopping on the NYC Subway, you'll need to plan out your route. You can use an NYC Subway map, or go to http://www.nysubway.com/routeplanner for additional resources.

  2. Step 2

(Enter the subway.) Once your route is planned, you need to find the nearest subway entrance and use it. They're all over NYC. If you can't find one, just ask someone. Most New Yorkers take the subway regularly.

  3. Step 3

(Buy ticket / MetroCard.) Once inside the NYC subway, you need to find a MetroCard Machine and buy a ticket. The machines are touch-operated, so simply follow the onscreen instructions to buy your ticket or MetroCard. For a one-way trip, buy a Single Ride ticket. For all others, you're better off buying a MetroCard.

  4. Step 4

(Find and board train.) Swipe your subway ticket / MetroCard through an open turnstile and walk through it. Follow the signs hanging from the ceiling to find your train. Walk down the stairs, and wait for the next train. Once it arrives, hop on it.

  5. Step 5

(Make any necessary transfers.) If your ride through the subway requires you to take multiple trains, make sure you catch them. If not, wait until the train arrives at your stop.

  6. Step 6

(Exit the subway.) When you reach your stop, exit the train and walk towards the exit. Pass through the exit turnstile, and walk out of the subway.

Tips & Warnings
  • Hold the MetroCard so that the black bar faces left when it passes through the swipe.
  • Don't be afraid to ask Transit employees or other subway users for help.
  • Don't fall asleep on the train or you will miss your stop. If anybody claims they can sleep and not miss their stop, good for them.
