How to Set Up a Remote VPN

If you need to connect to a work or school network from home, you will need to set up a Remote Virtual Private Network, or VPN. These instructions are made for Windows Vista Users, but XP setup is largely similar. A VPN will let you connect to your work network and access files as if you were using a computer right there!

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A computer
  • An internet connection
  • The information of a the network you are connecting to
  • About 10 minutes
  1. Step 1

    Click on "Start", open "Control Panel"

  2. Step 2

    Click on the "Network and Internet" button

  3. Step 3

    Under "Networking and Sharing Center" click "Connect to a Network"

  4. Step 4

    At the bottom of the "Connect to a Network" box, click "Set up a Connection or Network"

  5. Step 5

    Select "Connect to a Workplace" and click "Next"

  6. Step 6

    Enter the Server information and any required passwords for the network. Asking it to remember your password is your decision. Click "Create"

  7. Step 7

    You may now connect immediately to your VPN or connect later. To Connect later, simply open "Start" and click on the "Connect To" button. From there, you may choose a VPN to connect to.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can save connections to multiple VPN's
  • Make sure to consult with your Work's or University's IT department before setting up a connection
  • Make sure your internet is working
  • Do not share or give away VPN information
  • If you click "remember password," anybody on your computer can access your work files
