Smart bargain shoppers are using thrift stores and designer consignment stores to score steals and deals in handbags, jewelry and designer clothes. While many people are using consignment stores to sell their clothing for cash, others are finding buried designer treasure at neighborhood thrift stores.

Use the following tips to find a long lost Gucci purse or a ritzy antique necklace at a consignment or thrift store.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Steer clear of tony zip codes. No need to fly to Beverly Hills 90210 to find the most expensive goods. This thrift store myth no longer applies to discount shopping. Designer consignment and thrift stores spread their merchandise throughout the city to ensure that all customers get an opportunity to get the best for less.

  2. Step 2

Find a church-run thrift store or charity consignment store for great deals. These discount stores are not open 7 days a week, so the traffic is low and the deals are high. Get on the mailing list of these non-profit stores to ensure that you don't miss the monthly clearance sales and thrift store bonanzas that are great for charitable fashion shoppers and bargain hunters.

  3. Step 3

Shop online consignment and thrift store for special deals. Goodwill has a new online thrift store that sells designer clothes, jewelry and appliances for amazing low prices. Use your favorite web browser and type in the words "designer consignment store" to find great deals on the web. Check out RodeoDriveResale.com for Pucci, Gucci and St. John suits and handbags for up to 75 percent off retail prices.

  4. Step 4

Ask for a lower price. Haggling is encouraged at thrift stores and designer consignment stores. Find a manager and ask for a discount to find the best deals. If a has a defect, has a small hole in the hem, or is missing button ask for a 15, 20 or 35 percent discount on the item.
