Things You'll Need:
- your credit report
- the addresses of the credit bureau you wish to contact.
- time and patience
-
Step 1
Step 1. Acquire a current copy of your credit bureau. There are several methods available. You can call direct.
Experian 888.397.3742
Equifax 800.685.1111
Trans Union 800.888.4213 -
Step 2
Step 2.Legally you are allowed to contest any item on your report(s) that you feel is not correct. The burden of proof rests on the credit bureau. Your letter must communicate that the item is wrongly assigned or was not late. Those are the only points you can contest.
-
Step 3
Step 3. Inform the bureau of what outcome you want. IE: deleted or late marks removed.
-
Step 4
Step 4. You are required to explain why you dispute this item. You have to create a reason for them to inquire about the "mark".
-
Step 5
Step 5. resolve your disputes one or two items at a time.
keep track of every contact. Make your plea every 3 months or so. Become a bit more aggressive with each contact: Ask for someone that can help, file complaints etc. Point out the lack of consistency in the reporting as proof that errors happen. IE wrong contact information. -
Step 6
Step 6. Contacts the creditors that filed the reports. Perhaps they will agree to remove or modify the negative listings. This is where the patience and persistence pays off. Stay focused and keep after it......
