1
Locate your system restore media. You will need either the restore media supplied with your Dell laptop or the Windows Installation CD for the version of Windows installed on your laptop.
-
2
Inventory your laptop. Make note of all the applications you’ve installed and important files on your hard disk drive. In addition, write down the major settings for your Internet, networking connections and printers. Having notes handy will save you some headache later on.

3
Identify and back up the files you want to save to your backup media. You can do this manually or use the “Files and Settings Transfer Wizard” in XP or “Windows Easy Transfer” in Vista and Windows 7 to copy your files and some Windows settings. This will make the rebuilding process much easier.
-
4
Insert your restore media into the appropriate drive and boot from the media. Depending on your laptop model and version of Windows, you may have a CD, DVD or floppy drive, and in some cases, you may have more than one of these. You may have to press “F12” or some other key to bring up the boot menu so you can select which device to boot from.
-
5
Select “Reformat” when prompted by the setup wizard. Both the Dell and Windows setup will give you the option to reformat the hard drive before reinstalling the operating system.
-
6
Finish the setup and restoration process. Dell and Windows setups differ based on your laptop model and version of Windows, but both are straightforward and easy to follow.
-
7
Restore your backed up data once the operating system has been reinstalled. Copy any files or run the “Files and Settings Transfer Wizard” or "Windows Easy Transfer" to restore your data.
-
8
Use your inventory notes to rebuild your Dell laptop. Work through your notes like a checklist, installing and configuring your third-party software. You may skip old software that you no longer use, which will preserve space on your hard drive.
