It's quite easy to train for medical coding & billing these days as medical coding courses can be downloaded right from the internet. Don't get me wrong though - training to be a medical coder and understand medical billing can be quite grueling - you'll take courses in anatomy and physiology along with information about completing insurance claim forms and billing procedures. Part of the training for medical coder is understanding the very strict HIPAA requirements. But, the rewards of working as a medical coder & biller are numerous - including finding a flexible work from home position which are available in the field. As long as you have internet access, you can do medical coding & billing.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

~~Understand the financial commitment required for medical coding school tuition~~

Medical coding training is not cheap! Some schools offer financial assistance in the form of low interest student loans if you're accepted into their program (I'm not exactly sure why anyone wouldn't be...).

  2. Step 2

~~Research online schools from which to train for medical coding & billing~~

There are quite a few schools offering online courses but do research to find the program that fits into your lifestyle. Some schools offer medical coding programs offer e-classes which meet at set times; others are more flexible and self-paced training so your medical coding & billing courses can fit into your work or home life schedule.

  3. Step 3

~~Look for a school that offer medical coding & billing placement help upon completion of the courses~~

Some schools will offer extensive placement once you've completed the online medical billing & coding courses. Other schools will even waive the tuition fees if you can't find placement upon completion of the courses. Check the fine print though - it's not always as it seems and you might have to enroll in a more expensive program to get this type of assistance.

  4. Step 4

~~Beware of schools offering you a 'certificate' upon course completion~~

Currently, there is no mandatory billing certification so your 'certificate' is about as good as the paper it's printed on. It would be more worth your time to get an entry level job in medical coding & billing while you take online courses so you'll have some experience after completing your courses.

Tips & Warnings
  • Unlike other fields, finding employment in working with medical records and in the health care industry in general is expected to increase 16% by 2016. There are plenty of jobs to be found in medical coding & billing so get going!
  • This is when that high school course in Latin roots is going to come in handy. You'll have a much easier time with the science courses required if you can take apart scientific words.
  • On the job training is also acceptable for the medical coding & billing field but you'll get an entry level salary of right above minimum wage as you learn the trade.
