This article gives a thorough description of the steps required to change a flat tube or install a new tire on a bicycle.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • air pump
  • two flat head screwdrivers
  • any key
  1. Step 1

Remove the air from the tube inside the tire. If the tube is already flat move on. If the tube is still holding some air, use a key to press on the small valve inside the valve stem. You may need to apply some pressure to the outside of the tire to force air out.

  2. Step 2

Use the first screwdriver to pry the tire away from the rim. Carefully push the screwdriver between the rim and the tire and guide the screwdriver past the other side of the tire and rim.

  3. Step 3

Slide the second screwdriver in next to the first. While prying to force to tire off of the rim, slide the second screwdriver around the rim. This should force the tire off of the rim.

  4. Step 4

Separate the tube, tire, and rim

  5. Step 5

Insert the new tube into the tire as if it were on the rim

  6. Step 6

Make sure you know what direction the rim will be facing on the bike and what way the tire should be facing on the rim. Many tires are directional, and checking now will prevent you from having to do this all over again.

  7. Step 7

Feed the valve stem from the tube through the hole in the rim.

  8. Step 8

Push one side of the tire over the lip of the rim into the center and carefully flip the rim over.

  9. Step 9

Carefully do the same to the other side of the tire until all parts of the tire are inside the lips of the rim. Adjust the position of the tire on the rim such that the valve stem sticks straight out of the hole in the rim.

  10. Step 10

Add air to the tube using a bike pump. Using an air compressor may inflate the tube to quickly and damage it. Check your tires for recommended pressure and fill to within that range.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be very careful when using the screwdrivers around the tube and tire. You want to get under the tire without damaging anything.
