Painted Aquarium Back

Easy step by step guide to painting the back of your aquarium.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Aquarium / Tank
  • Krylon Fusion Paint
  • Newspaper
  • Ventilated Room
  1. Step 1
    New AGA 75g Tank
    New AGA 75g Tank

Painting the back of your aquarium or tank is simple to do and will add quite a bit of dramatic ambience to your setup. It helps hide cords and filters, as well as making your fish and or corals pop. First step is to select the tank you want to use.

  2. Step 2

The next step is to carefully lay your tank on it's front. Make sure you cushion the tank to help avoid scratches on the front of the glass. Also make sure to put plenty of newspaper around the tank to protect whatever surface you decide to paint on.

  3. Step 3

Once the tank is in position, you can begin painting. Use spray paint in normal fashion the way you would paint anything else. Make sure to paint several light coats, and to keep the can a good 12" or so away from the glass. Nice even strokes will help keep the paint from running. Taping around the edges can help keep paint off the sides of the tank. If it does happen, do not worry it will scrape off. Just use some water and a razor blade and it will scrape right off.

  4. Step 4

Let the tank dry 24 hours and you're ready to add water! It's a very simple process that will really enhance your freshwater or saltwater aquarium!

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure to spray nice even strokes lightly.
  • Add multiple coats for best finish.
  • Black or Blue makes the best background.
  • Do not use spray paint on an existing setup. The fumes may settle in the water.
  • Use caution not to scratch the front of the tank while painting.
