One of the biggest expenses in any household's budget will likely be food costs. Saving money in food usually translates into some significant savings for the overall budget. With a little bit of planning, it is possible to save significant amounts of money on food. Here's how to save money on food.

  1. Step 1

    Plan a weekly meal menu based upon items that are on sale at the grocery store or based upon extra ingredients that you already have at home. Having a written plan is the key to financial success and the key to saving money on food. Scour newspaper ads before you go shopping to identify key ingredients that are on sale. Also, set a monthly food budget and stick to it. This will help you to curb spending.

  2. Step 2

    Clip coupons to maximize your savings. Coupons can really add up to huge food cost savings. Use any newspaper ads for coupons or online sources as well. Places like Target offer online coupons. Other sites, such as Hot Coupon World, offer weekly coupon deals.

  3. Step 3

    Buy food products in bulk to reduce your overall food cost. Most of the time, larger containers of food have a lower per ounce or per unit cost. Pay attention to the price label on shelf or make sure to bring a calculator with you to find the best deal.

  4. Step 4

    Purchase less processed food. Processing adds cost to food and often reduces the nutritional quality. Stick to the perimeter of the grocery store to maximize your health and savings.

  5. Step 5

    Eat at home more often. The food costs of eating out a restaurants often can become really high in a short amount of time. It will always cost less to prepare a meal at home.

    Reduce wasting of food. Wasted food that is spoiled or unused costs you extra money. Make sure to utilize any leftovers that you may have as well to eliminate wasted food. Freeze any leftovers that you can't consume within a reasonable amount of time.
