  • 9x5-inch baking pan
  • Saucepan
  • 2/3 cup shortening
  • 2 cups cake flour
  • 1 1/4 cups sugar
  • 1 tbs. instant coffee
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
  • 1/4 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 ounces unsweetened baking chocolate

      Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Beat the shortening until it becomes creamy.

      Melt the chocolate on low heat in your saucepan. Brew the coffee to make 1 tablespoon of strong coffee for your cake.

      Stir the flour, sugar, coffee, salt, cream of tartar and baking soda into the shortening.

      Add the water and vanilla to your mixture. Mix until your batter is well blended and smooth.
