Applying a varnish to wooden floors and objects adds an attractive sheen. Unfortunately, varnish stains can be quite difficult to remove, particularly when it has dried. Learn how to remove varnish stains from clothing and other surfaces.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Laundry detergent
  • Pretreating fluid
  • Turpentine or varnish-removing solvent
  • Sponges or cloths
  1. Step 1

    Treat varnish stains while they are still wet, when they are easier to remove. Immediately flush the varnish with water.

  2. Step 2

    Apply a detergent and rinse the stain.

  3. Step 3

    Apply a pretreating fluid or laundry detergent to newly-stained fabrics. Rinse with water and dry. Wash as you normally would.

  4. Step 4

    Use turpentine or a specialty product to remove stubborn varnish stains. Apply a detergent afterward. Leave a cloth or sponge soaked with hot water on the stain overnight. Remove and rinse.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some varnish stains may be permanent.
