How to Clean a Snorkel Mask

Snorkeling is a fun and easy way to enjoy the ocean, and to see the marine life under the water. Keeping equipment such as your snorkeling mask clean is essential because salt crystals from the saltwater can dry and harden on the mask, causing scratches and small holes. It also can weaken the straps. Snorkel masks are like scuba masks, and are cleaned and maintained the same way.

Instructions

    • 1

When you first purchase your snorkel mask, there will be an oily film on it. To remove it, take a small amount of toothpaste and rub it on the inside of the lenses using your fingertips. Do not use your fingernails. They might scratch the lenses.

    • 2

Rinse the mask with freshwater until the toothpaste is completely gone.

    • 3

Use a little toothpaste on the strap to remove any oil from it. Rinse thoroughly with water.

    • 4

Rinse the snorkel thoroughly in freshwater in a bucket after each use. Make sure there is no sand or grit left in it.

    • 5

Dry the mask thoroughly before storing it.

Tips & Warnings

  • The toothpaste cleaning should be repeated periodically to keep the oily film from coming back. The snorkel mask should always be stored in a hard case. If it didn't come with one, a case can be purchased separately.

  • Keep the case out of direct sunlight when not in use. Sunlight will begin to break down the silicone.
