How To Change the Domain Name in Windows

A domain name is a key part of the configurations on a network computer, as it allows the computer to join a domain ranging from a private one at home, to a corporate-wide domain used at the office. The computer's name plus the domain name together make a fully qualified name that identifies it on the network and enables protocols to route packets to the machine. Configuring a Windows machine with a domain name only takes a few steps.

Instructions

    • 1

      Right-click the "My Computer" icon on the desktop. Select "Properties" from the menu.

    • 2

      Click the "Computer Name" tab and click the "Change" button.

    • 3

      Enter a computer name for the computer. You can change this name in addition to the domain name, or leave the current entry.

    • 4

      Enter a new domain name in the textbox labeled "Domain." The domain name should be formatted with the following syntax:
      <mydomainname.xxx>
      Replace "xxx" with the typical .com, .net, .org, or qualified extension registered to the network.

    • 5

      Press the "Ok" button to save the settings. Reboot the computer for the changes to take effect. After making these changes, the user can log on to the local network.
