Things You'll Need:

  • Bleach (or vinegar and baking soda)
  • Water
  • Stiff bristled scrub brush
  1. Step 1

Turn off the water to the toilet with a valve usually at the rear, bottom of the toilet. Turn clockwise. Flush the toilet to empty the water from the tank.

  2. Step 2

Mix the bleach solution: one part bleach to three parts water; pour the solution into the tank and allow to sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Or three parts vinegar to one part baking soda with enough water to make a paste to smear onto the mold. Allow to sit 10 to 15 minutes,

  3. Step 3

After the bleach solution has had a chance to soak, scrub the tank thoroughly up all sides. Don't forget to also scrub the bottom of the tank around the flapper. Scrub firmly to ensure the mold is totally removed. Or, apply the vinegar and baking soda.

  4. Step 4

Rinse the tank with clean water and flush again to empty. Check the tank to be sure all the mold is gone. If it is not, repeat the process, letting the bleach solution sit for a longer period of time. If using the vinegar and baking soda, reapply and allow to sit for a longer period.

  5. Step 5

Once mold has been removed, you may turn the water back on and resume normal use.
