How to Do Greek Hairstyles

Like many other Greek cultural customs, hairstyles are often very classical and ornate. The ancient Greeks took great pride in creating the most beautiful and extravagant art and architecture, and this pride is reflected in manners of dress and grooming. Young girls often wore their hair loose below their shoulders, but young adult women tended to put their hair up in buns and chignons. Even now in more modern times, the Grecian influence can be seen in fashion and beauty circles. A popular Greek hairstyle is the wavy chignon with curly tendrils hanging down over the ears, near the front of the face. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Wash and condition hair as usual. Allow hair to air dry, which will make it easier to work with. Blow-drying can cause hair to become overly frizzy and puffy.

    • 2

Section hair off into three or four different parts. It will make styling easier. Place the curling iron to get heated.

    • 3

Starting from the bottom section, take an inch-wide strand of hair and wrap it around the curling iron. Leave on for 10 to 15 seconds; then slowly remove the curling iron. Use your fingers to shape the curl.

    • 4

Continue curling with the iron until all of your hair is covered in spirals. Use a thin barrel iron for tighter curls and a wide barrel iron for looser waves.

    • 5

Apply some hairspray to hold the curls in place. Do not comb or brush your curls. Use your fingers to detangle or shape.

    • 6

Take two strands of curls from each side of your forehead and bring them to the front to hang over each side of your face.

    • 7

Gather the rest of your hair back into a low ponytail and secure with an elastic. Twist the ponytail around the elastic until you have a round, low bun.

    • 8

Secure the bun with bobby pins. Apply a final mist of hairspray to hold the entire chignon in place.

Tips & Warnings

  • Apply some mousse to each strand before curling your hair. This will make your curls bouncier and shiny. Accessorize with a thin, gold hairband for a Grecian goddess look.
