How to Make a Bowl With Glass Beads

Making a bowl out of glass beads is a very creative project that is easy once you have the proper materials. Depending on the properties of the materials you choose, you can have a heat-safe bowl for everyday food-contact use. Be sure to check that the food-grade epoxy you select for your project is also heat safe if you wish to use your bowl in the oven or clean it in the dishwasher.

Things You'll Need

  • Food-grade epoxy
  • Silicone-based release agent for molds
  • Glass beads
  • Two nesting bowls, with enough space between them when nested to lay a single layer of beads (make sure the bowls are of the size that you'd like your finished bowl to be)
  • Dish soap and warm water

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the glass beads in some warm, soapy water.

    • 2

Apply the release agent to all surfaces of both bowls. The inside of one bowl and the outside of the other will be directly in contact with the epoxy, but covering both bowls entirely will protect against epoxy drips adhering to the bowls.

    • 3

Lay a single layer of glass beads in whichever pattern you choose between the two nested bowls. If you find it easier, you may place a layer of beads in the bottom of the larger bowl before inserting the smaller bowl, then continue to add beads up the walls of the bowls.

    • 4

Mix a large amount of epoxy thoroughly.

    • 5

Pour the epoxy into the glass beads between the two bowls. Use a skewer or a chopstick, if necessary, to remove any air pockets. Fill the gap between the bowls completely to the rim of the support bowls.

    • 6

Allow the epoxy to cure overnight before removing the support bowls. Allow the epoxy to attain full hardness before using the bowl you just made.
