Minimize the Side Effects of Arimidex

Arimidex is a hormonal treatment medication commonly prescribed to postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. Eight years of clinical data has proven that it is an effective treatment for breast cancer as it reduces the amount of estrogen in the body. Side effects of the medication include hot flashes, mood changes, pain, nausea and vomiting, sore throat, high blood pressure and depression. The most frequent complaint is weakness in the joints and muscles.

If you begin to see side effects from the Arimidex after you begin treatment, it is important to speak with your doctor immediately. Discuss dosing and other medications that may relieve the effects of the Arimidex.

If you are taking tamoxifen or another estrogen-containing therapy, discuss this with your doctor. Arimidex is made to decrease the estrogen in your body. Estrogen therapies will combat the Arimidex and could cause unnecessary, harmful side effects.

To treat pain or stiffness in the muscles and joints, begin a schedule of stretching, especially in the morning, when these symptoms are typically most prevalent. Light cardio programs, such as walking and water aerobics, are also effective in fighting the pain and stiffness caused by Arimidex.

Although there is no sure way to get rid of hot flashes, you can minimize the discomfort with fans and water. Keep fans in every room, on your desk at work and even on your nightstand so it can blow directly on you. Baby wipes or a small spray bottle in your purse will provide quick, refreshing relief from hot flashes.

To reduce nausea and vomiting, keep foods on hand that are commonly used for upset stomachs. Plain crackers and broth will give you nutrients but should not cause stomach irritation. Over-the-counter medications, such as Mylanta, are also effective in the treatment of nausea. Speak with your doctor before beginning any other medication and use only as needed.
