South America is full of beautiful wonders from the Amazon Basin to the mysterious shrines at Easter Island. Backpacking across such a massive amount of space can seem overwhelming especially with so many great things to see, but if you have a plan you can do it.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Passport
  • Travel Guide
  • Map
  • Walking/Hiking Shoes
  • Backpack
  • Clothing
  • Camping Gear
  • Climbing Gear
  • Spanish & Brazilian Portuguese Phrase Book
  • Money, Traveler's Check, and Credit Card
  1. Step 1

Familiarize yourself with a map. Mark on the map with a pencil all the places your interested in seeing and then you can start planning your itinerary.

  2. Step 2

Research South American countries. By doing this you'll find out about attractions you didn't know where there, learn about local culture and cuisine, but research you come across may help you decide whether or not you will want to visit, especially if you're researching a place like Colombia.

  3. Step 3

Make an itinerary. When doing this take into consideration how long your stay in South America will be and where you want to go. Then you can decide how many days you have to spend at each destination and how much time you have to travel. Make a realistic itinerary don't plan to get from the Amazon Basin to Rio de Janiero in one day unless you're flying on a plane.

  4. Step 4

Visas are usually issued at the border or at the airport. Nationalities have different requirements and price differs depending on what country you are in, Peru, Chile, Argentina, among a few others are free, Brazil cost $100 US for United States citizens and most others.

  5. Step 5

Make sure you get your vaccinations before leaving. Vaccinations for yellow fever, typhoid, diptheria, polio, cholera, and small pox should be all that you need. Bringing a first aid kit along would also be very helpful in case of any emergency.

  6. Step 6

Set a daily budget for food, transportation, and shelter. Things cost differently in every country if you're in Bolivia a hotel costs a lot less then one in Brazil.

  7. Step 7

Join traveling groups. It helps you meet new people and keeps you from having to travel alone. Women travelers should try not to travel anywhere alone for obvious reasons.

  8. Step 8

Bring a camera. Take lots of pictures as you travel to places like the Inca Ruins, Amazon Basin, Rio de Janeiro, Gallopagos Islands, Easter Island, the Andes Mountains, and the beautiful Carnivals if you're going in February.

Tips & Warnings
  • Plan transportation as far ahead as possible if you know you'll need to ride a bus or a plane. Coming into South America by car is nearly impossible because there is no road, so make accomadations to fly or take a boat.
  • Use common sense while in foreign countries, don't run around like a drunken idiot have class and respect the culture.
