How to Get a Career in Biomedical Engineering

Biomedical engineers are professionals that combine engineering skills with medical information to design aids in order to help medical patients. They work varied types of settings and environments :hospitals,laboratories,undersea and space programs, universities,
private consulting firms. It's a great career for people who are interested in engineering and medicine and want to help people without having direct contact with patients.

Instructions

1. During highschool,concentrate on courses such as mathematics (college algebra, trigonometry,precalculus),chemistry, biology, physics, english,computer science.Try to maintain a high GPA, because all medical engineering schools take this into consideration in the admission process.

2. Complete a biomedical engineering degree, at one of the twenty-nine programs accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).A bachelor degree in biomedical engineering is the minimal education requirement to enter the career of biomedical engineering. However, it is higly preferable that you continue your education with a graduate degree or doctoral degree in biomedical engineering.

3. Another option to start a career in biomedical engineering is to complete a bachelor degree in engineering, chemistry or computer engineering.While completing this bachelor degree,concentrate on the traditional engineering disciplines and then earn a graduate degree in biomedical engineering.Currently, there are nine graduate degree programs in the United States that are acredited by ABET.

• licensing as a professional biomedical engineer is optional, but is preferable, and in some employment situations is mandatory.
