Keep Recently Planted Plants Alive

It takes a lot of care to keep recently planted trees and shrubs alive, especially in the summer. These tips will help ensure that your new plantings will make it through the first few months.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Water
  • Fertilizer
  1. Step 1

When the tree or shrub is first planted, water it for several minutes. The bigger the plant, the longer it needs to be watered. Let the water soak in for 2 minutes then return and water it for 2 more minutes.

  2. Step 2

During the first 2 weeks, water the plant 2-3 times a day depending on the heat. Water each plant for 2 minutes each time, then let the water soak in for 1 minute then water for 1 minute more.

  3. Step 3

Refrain from using fertilizers for the first 1 1/2 months.

  4. Step 4

After it has been in the ground for 2 weeks, for the remainder of the month water once daily for 1 minute. Water slightly more or less depending on amount of rain and heat.

  5. Step 5

After the first month, water once every 2-3 days for 1 minute.

  6. Step 6

After being in the ground for 1 1/2 months apply a fertilizer such as Osmocote. By this time, the plant will be established enough to be able to grow.

  7. Step 7

After 2 months water plant once every 3-4 days until it has been in the ground for 6 months. After 6 months only water when need be, and continue to apply fertilizer as recommended on the bottle.
