Things You'll Need:
- Mirror
- Patience (to shop, try on & select the best clothes for your body)
- Common sense!
-
Step 1
Don't wear too-tight clothes. Understand the difference between "fitted" and "tight". Fitted means just that-choose well-fitting items with no gaps between buttons and no overflowing "muffin top" love handles spilling out over the waistline. Two rules of thumb: If you can't sit or stretch comfortably, it's too tight! If you can see your undergarments through it, it's too tight!
-
Step 2
Buy jeans with stretch denim. This miracle fabric can make you look like you lost ten pounds overnight. Skip the "skinny leg" pairs and head towards the low rise and boot cut options-these are the most popular & flattering, for good reason. The dropped waist masks your belly & the wider cuff balances out your midsection, giving you a flattering hourglass look. The trick is to try on as many pairs as possible to find the perfect fit. You'll know it when you find it-it will be the jeans you WANT to come out of the fitting room in!

Step 3
Wear high heels. Wear em' as high as you can stand to-they'll make your butt and legs look longer and skinnier. Don't believe me? Try on your favorite jeans or pants with and without a pair of basic 3" pumps. The mirror doesn't lie my friend. If you can't hack stilettos, at least try 1-2" kitten heels. You'll still look skinnier than in your Nikes.
-
Step 4
Avoid horizontal lines & very light colors. Horizontal lines made you appear wider, and light colors make you look heavier, although it is okay to wear a lighter color on your top half if you wear a darker color on your bottom half.
Wear vertical lines & darker colors. You'll instantly appear taller and thinner, and dark clothes can hide extra weight, especially chocolate brown, black and navy blue, three classic colors to try. Add lighter color accessories, such as shoes, scarves, and belts, to lighten up the overall look. -
Step 5
Understand your body type. Are you an apple or a pear? If you carry weight in your midsection, but have relatively narrow hips and thighs, you're an apple. If you're slimmer on top but have wider hips and thighs, you're a pear. Apples should wear clothes that fit their hips but are looser around the belly. For example, an apple can wear a fitted pencil skirt with a long tunic top that flows over and hides the stomach area. For pears, think fitted tops & nipped in waistlines, with looser pants & flowing skirts. A slim knit top over wide legged jeans or pants is perfect for apples.
