Step 1
Your party of survivalists should have at least 4 weapons per person: shotgun, rifle, pistol and knife. Lots of ammo. Body armor if you can.
-
Step 2
If you plan to stick it out at home, you’ll want to reinforce the entry ports into your house. Steel frame and reinforced door, bullet-proof windows (you can buy them, but not at Home Depot – search ‘swissshade security’).
-
Step 3
Have a pantry stocked high with dried grains like rice. You can buy 20 pounds of rice for like 8 bucks at Costco, so there’s no reason why an average-income person can’t stock up on 6 months of rice fairly cheaply. Also stock up on dried/canned beans and canned meats like Tuna for protein. Likewise multi-vitamins, lots of water and other liquids.
-
Step 4
Keep a “bug out bag”, also known as a “BoB”. This a backpack which contains food for 3 days, hand-held radio, tarp to make a lean-to, sleeping bag, fireproof matches or a couple of lighters, a couple of hundred bucks, flashlight, water-filtration kit used in camping. Basically camp gear that’ll keep you alive for a week or more, minus that much food. You’d need this bugout bag during periods of civil unrest (in your area), a nuke going off in a major city nearby (so you can get away and avoid fallout), etc.
-
Step 5
Have a location to meet your significant other at in the event of serious heavy stuff going down. This way you both don’t waste time coming back to the house and wasting precious time. Perhaps have a secondary location in the event that the first one isn’t an option (for example, you drive up to the gas station in question and see armed men who are occupying it).
-
Step 6
Under civil unrest circumstances, or if your government turns into a tyranny, expect the government to go door to door taking what you have or removing you in some way from your possessions. Depending upon how likely this is to happen (and you should have plenty of warning), perhaps bury weapons and other hard-to-get possessions in remote/safe locations.
-
Step 7
If you can, have access to an old truck that runs well, and have spare oil, oil filters, tools and other parts that tend to break, and the Chiltons manual for it. You will need some sort of transportation in a world gone mad.
-
Step 8
Circumstances vary, but if you live “in the country”, then having mules or horses will be a big asset.
-
Step 9
Be ready to barter. Anything small, easily transportable and hard to come by without the benefit of industry will be useful. Bullets/weapons, whisky, non-hybrid seeds, hand-crank flashlight (so you don’t need batteries), medicine. These are the gold of the future.
-
Step 10
If you have to go across country, or keep moving in general, other opportunities arise if you have access to a sailboat or collapsible kayak. Both will let you move free under specific circumstances, and will also offer you the option of another source of food: fish. So add ‘fishing tackle’ to your Bug Out Bag.
-
Step 11
In any case where you have to move move move, be prepared for road blocks, and be prepared to defend what is yours. Also, scout the horizon as you move along from time to time to avoid walking into an ambush. The World Gone Mad scenario will leave people desperate, and they will take what they can rather than do without.
