Energy costs may be lowered slightly or significantly by eliminating phantom power which is also known as phantom energy or waste energy. Phantom energy (phantom load) is energy that is wasted by an electrical appliance or product that drains energy even though the appliance or product is not being used. Here are a few helpful steps to eliminate phantom energy (phantom power), stop the waste of energy, and lower energy costs on the electrical bill.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Unplug cords that are not in use to save energy costs and eliminate phantom energy. Cell phone chargers and other household electrical plugs waste energy whether they are being used by the product(s) that requires them when they are not plugged in. Phantom energy (phantom load) is drawn from these types of plug-in cords that are plugged into electrical outlets!

  2. Step 2

Another step to save energy costs and eliminate phantom power is by putting computers, printers, and other similar items onto a power strip. By putting these items onto a power strip eliminates phantom energy (phantom load) by allowing users to completely shut off items that are in standby mode. Printers and other items waste energy when they are on stand by; thus, by putting such items on a power strip or surge protector reduces energy costs by eliminating phantom load.

  3. Step 3

Unplugging consumer electronics can save on energy costs by cutting down on phantom power. There is phantom energy or phantom load being used on electronic products with circuitry that to go into an idol mode when they are not in use and then rouse swiftly when turned on. Consumer products that waste energy (phantom load) are TV, VCR, cable or satellite control box, home theater system, and others. Consumer products that have clocks and digital standby lights consume energy costs by consuming phantom power.
