Things You'll Need:
- Computer w/ internet access
- A mediator who knows you and the person in question
- A convincing costume
- A catalyst (ex. crystal ball, tarot cards, palm, etc.)
- Some knowledge of psychology and/or human behavior
- Good communication skills
-
Step 1
Decide on a character. Are you going to be a mysterious psychic who peers deeply into tea leaves and gives ominous readings? Are you a psychic with an attitude who tells it like it is? Maybe you're a funny psychic or a psychic who cares and gives advice? Decide on what kind of psychic you want to be and build up that persona.
-
Step 2
Study human psychology and behavior. Human beings have basic similarities and studying the fields of psychology and human behavior may give you an idea of how to read a person. Study general behaviors in order to help improve your skills for cold readings.
-
Step 3
Learn how to read faces and what certain physical cues and aspects of body language means. If they look down and to the left, are they recovering a memory or making something up? Facial cues are paramount in importance when it comes to psychic readings, so learn whether a smirk means they believe you or they are starting to doubt your abilities and work around it.
-
Step 4
Decide on a catalyst for your readings. It is easier to hide behind something such as a crystal ball, a tarot card, tea leaves, or even a subject's own palm reading. This way, you can either make up your own explanation for the tarot cards, tea leaves, or any other tool that you use; or you can claim that you were just reading what the catalyst was saying to you and that it was the subject's palm or tea leaves that misinformed you rather than your own lack of psychic prowess.
-
Step 5
Learn the psychic lingo and mannerisms. Talk about meditation or act like you are meditating to get in touch with the spirit world. Drink tea and/or talk about the magic of crystals. Psychic readings are about the metaphysical, so give a convincing performance by getting into character even in forms of speech and behavior.
-
Step 6
Ask your friends to go out and recommend you to potential clients. This is especially important since this friend can give you excellent information about the client before the reading.
-
Step 7
Gather as much information as you can about the client. Ask a friend about the client's entire name, place of work, hobbies, problems, anything that can give you a clue about what he/she may ask. Search for the client on search engines or social media networks. The psychic reading needs to be convincing, and specific information will surprise the client who thinks you know nothing about him/her.
-
Step 8
Decide on a place in which to do the reading. If you want to do it at your house, then consider creating a mystical atmosphere full of crystals and such in order to enhance the "psychic energy" of the room. If you do it at the subject's house, then you may be able to analyze the inner details of the house in order to gather more clues about the subject's lifestyle. Not to mention they may feel more comfortable being at home rather than at a stranger's house.
-
Step 9
Review all of your notes about the client, all of the information about human behavior, and have a general idea of what to say in terms of a cold reading. There are scripts online that have general tips for cold readings.
-
Step 10
Get into character and the second that the client knocks on your door until he/she leave your house remain in character. Invite him/her in and explain to the client what sort of psychic or metaphysical thing you were doing to prepare for his/her arrival.
-
Step 11
Have the subject sit down in a comfortable seat and dive into some small talk with him/her. Small talk can give you so much information and it helps to build a repertoire with the client. The more a client trusts you, the more likely he/she is to believe in your powers.
-
Step 12
Get your client into the game. Have him/her close their eyes and meditate on the question. Have your client fall into a state of deep relaxation or release their negative vibes. The more your client interacts with the reading, the more invested he/she feels about what is being said and the more believable you become as a psychic.
-
Step 13
Ask the client about the specific question for the reading or ask him/her to silently focus on it while you shuffle the cards, meditate, or prepare for the psychic reading. There are a few general aspects of life that most clients ask about, so if you do not have any idea what the reading is about, focus on a few general areas: love, career, health, and finances.
-
Step 14
Start out with a broad reading, and then start mentioning more narrow topics and listen to your client. If the client appears to agree then continue down the road. If the client is unsatisfied then suggest other situations until you receive verbal or non-verbal approval. For example, if you start talking about how a client should become a lawyer and receive a dirty look, then you should backtrack and respond, "But this means you are a strong person who could also do well in writing, publishing, accounting, teaching..." and continue to do so until you receive a more favorable response. The quick rambling will throw them off in some cases because they become confused with trying to absorb all of the information.
-
Step 15
Fish for information and ask carefully crafted questions of the client. Humans want to be heard and they appreciate it when someone asks them questions and listens to them. Therefore, your client will be more likely to respond and you will gather more information about them. For example:
You: I sense severe pain from when you were younger. Were you involved in some accident or perhaps picked on as a child?
Client: I was constantly made fun of in school for being short and I always wanted to be taller.
You: This stress has followed you throughout life and that is why you do not feel as though you measure up to your own potential. You sell yourself short in all aspects in life and you need to overcome you past and focus on achieving great things. Let go of this trauma and success will come to you. -
Step 16
Feed them information and repeat it often. Develop logical arguments based on the information you have obtained. Watch the client every so often to see how he/she is responding to the reading, but not constantly or else the client will become nervous. Continue to do so until the reading is finished.
-
Step 17
Thank the client for his/her time and bless the client with peace as he/she walks out the door. Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the reading and focus on how to improve the next reading.

on 12/2/2009 This is a great article and I get your point and appreciate your sense of humor. And I am in the metaphysical industry. It is the people who are fake and take advantage of others that give the rest of us a bad name.

on 8/10/2009 Yes, and the point of this post, in case no one reads the warning above, is basically to show how some fake psychics try to convince others they are real. It's just one way that many of them do it. Sorry if it offends real ones, but it's more of a warning about how some fakes do it rather than a step-by-step guide. Keep informed, everyone. There are frauds out there and they are constantly using more and more tricks.

on 8/9/2009 anation for this besides that I'm psychic. I mean really specific details right down to the way a name is spelt etc. I don't **** around with general information. I'm not wasting people's time. Either way this post is a mockery to genuine psychics out there. I know them frauds I see them on a daily basis and anybody making money from this post, taking people's money from pretending to be psychic should commit suicide for all the false hope and fake closure provided during these fake psychic readings. Nobody should attempt this because it can cause serious mental damage to the people involved. I mean I don't have some crazy gift, I'm not some godly person. You can seriously mentally screw somebody up by doing this. What I tell clients I have to word extremely carefully, one wrong word, one false move, that person who is already unstable can do something to make their situation wor...

on 8/9/2009 This is insulting to everyone who is genuine in the industry. Over the phone, I can provide names of the people close to you in your life, give a psychical description of those people and tell you their personality in a matter of minutes. Doing this WITHOUT a client saying a word to me. I've done this for people all over the world, knowing nothing about them, NOT EVEN THEIR NAMES! Knowing the person's questions and situations even before they open their mouth. I've provided intimate details that nobody could have possibly provided for me. Picked up on information my clients kept close to their heart and never revealed to anybody, this isn't for friends either, I'm talking about people all over the country who just call. To a genuine psychic like me, this is insulting. Before a client opens their mouth I can tell them their entire situation and the results. There is no possible expl...
