Cuban Sandwich
Cuban Sandwich

The Cuban Sandwich has a long history, dating back to the mills and sugar fields of Cuba. When Cuban immigrants settled in Florida, they brought their culture and cuisine with them. The Cuban Sandwich is one of the most popular and iconic of these dishes, and is very easy to make.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cuban Bread
  • Cuban-roasted pork, sliced
  • Boiled ham, sliced
  • Genoa Salami, sliced
  • Swiss cheese, sliced
  • Dill pickle slices
  • Fresh garlic cloves
  • Yellow mustard
  • Sandwich press
  1. Step 1

Slice the Cuban roll in half and rub with garlic.

  2. Step 2

Spread an even layer of yellow mustard on both sides of the bread.

  3. Step 3

Place even layers of sliced pork, ham and salami on the bottom half of the sandwich.

    * The addition of salami represents the Italian influence on Cuban cuisine in Tampa, and is what makes it "Tampa Style".

  4. Step 4

Add a layer of sliced dill pickles on top of the meat.

  5. Step 5

Cover the meat and pickles with a layer of Swiss cheese.

  6. Step 6

Place the top of the roll on the sandwich and spread an even layer of butter on both sides.

  7. Step 7

Put the sandwich into a hot sandwich press and heat until the outside is toasted and the cheese is melted.

  8. Step 8

Remove from the sandwich press, slice in half and serve.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use Cuban Bread for the best taste, but French rolls can be substituted.
  • Slow cooked, well-seasoned pork is key to this sandwich.
  • Prep, wrap in foil and place in the refrigerator for later use.
  • Use only Yellow mustard, never Dijon, Brown or Spicy.
  • Don't use sweet pickles, as they will change the taste.
  • When removing the sandwich from the press, it will be extremely hot. Be careful.
