Do you love your job, but hate the work environment? It's hard when you like what you do, but don't get along with your co-workers. Or maybe there's a sour taste in the air after a bad promotion or a layoff. Whatever the case may be, you don't want your bad work environment to affect your work performance or bleed into your personal life. There are a few things you can do to help improve your work environment:

      First of all, it's imperative that you stop being negative and talking with other co-workers who are negative. There are always those people who like to complain about everything. Even when the morale is at an all time high, these people can find something to complain about. If you know people like this, stay away from them! At first, it's nice to vent, but the venting never stops. Vent once, and then stop talking about it. Talking about something bad for a prolonged period of time will keep the issue fresh in your mind and not allow yourself to forget it and move on. If it's something you can't change, accept it.

      If something really bad has occurred, talk to HR. If you don't want to do it by yourself, ask around and get a willing group together. There's strength in numbers.

      If there are things you CAN change that would help boost morale, do it. Work a little harder and create something that would make everyone's lives easier. You will become the favorite around the office.

      If you are a supervisor, reward for good behavior. Everyone likes to be recognized for their hard work. Take people out for lunch or give them a small gift to show your appreciation. Even the smallest things can mean a lot to a disgruntled employee. If you are lower on the totem pole, bring in bagels, coffee, donuts, or bake some cookies or cupcakes. Food always makes people smile. You will become very popular around the office!

      Decorate your office or cubicle. I know this sounds stupid, but creating a serene workspace will allow you to find comfort at your desk. Surround your desk & office with pictures of things you love.

      If your company will allow, play soothing music. Use earphones to plug into your iPod or speakers and relax while you're doing your work. Earphones will also dissuade those negative employees from coming to you to complain. Do you work peacefully and more productively.

      Take more breaks! Hey, smokers get two 15-minute breaks, why shouldn't you? Take a break, walk around the block or around the building. Get in a little exercise. This will help your body and brain stay awake and more alert.

      Dress Better. Go shopping and buy some new clothes! This sounds silly, but your appearance will directly affect the quality of your work. When you look better, you will act more confidently and will have a better outlook on the day! It's true!

      Keep healthy snacks by your desk. Munch on carrots, eat a banana, or nibble at a granola bar. If you're feeling tired or down, eat a healthy pick me up. Food releases endorphins in your brain which helps your attitude.
