Add Extra Security to an Apartment
Add Extra Security to an Apartment

When renting an apartment, you usually can't change your locks or install a security system. There are some simple things you can do though to make your apartment more secure.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Door Jam Bar
  • Stick on Door and Window Alarms
  • Wooden Rods
  • Saw
  1. Step 1

To start, add alarms to your doors and windows. You can purchase stick-on alarms for your doors and windows. The alarm comes in two parts. One part sticks to the door and the other part sticks to the door frame. When the door is opened, the parts are seperated and this sets off an alarm. These alarms feature an on and off switch so you don't have to hear the alarm as you enter and leave your apartment. Make sure that these alarms are securely positioned on your doors though because they will also sound if the adhesive fails and they fall off the door.

  2. Step 2

Next, you can secure your windows with some simple wooden rods. Measure the space above your bottom window and cut a wooden rod to that length. Place the wooden rod in the space between the window frame and bottom window when you want to secure the window and keep it shut.

  3. Step 3

You can also purchase a door jam rod that can add extra security to any door. This rod can be used for your front door or even a bedroom door. It works by bracing the door so people can't enter even if they unlock the door. The top of the rod slides under the door knob and the bottom rests on the floor at an angle. You should kick the rod into place to add pressure between the knob and the floor.
