Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Outlet Covers
  • Electrical Cord Covers
  • Toilet bowl lid locks
  • Cabinet locks
  • Trash can lids
  • Hardwood covers
  • Window locks and fasteners
  1. Step 1

First of do a once over of your house. Puppy proofing your home can be as easy if you know where to look. Just take stock of what you have to do, remember this golden rule: If it is not safe for a child it is NOT safe for a puppy.

  2. Step 2

Lets start with chemicals. All household chemicals should be properly stored, preferably together and away from your puppies food and your puppy. Puppy proofing like child proofing requires you to lock away these chemicals as they are very harmful if swallowed. Suggestions include placing all of the household chemicals together and putting a child proof lock on the cupboard. Though designed for children these locks are perfect for puppy proofing.

  3. Step 3

Next we are going to look at electrical. Electrical outlets should be covered when puppy proofing, as well as any exposed cords in your pets play area. These have oblivious dangers, especially due to the puppies instinct to chew everything.

  4. Step 4

Ok now lets talk environment. We will go with the indoors first. Furniture should be covered to prevent chewing, especially hardwood. Also be wary of your favorite recliner as puppies could become entrapped in the inner workings. Small objects and children toys and clothing should be put away. Also try to keep stairs and linoleum flooring inaccessible to properly puppy proof. Fasten all windows securely.

  5. Step 5

Take special care with your bathroom. Puppies love all the potential ill gotten goodies in there, trash can lids a must as well as a toilet lid locker.

  6. Step 6

Outside fence in a small area for your puppy to play. This should be as escape proof as possible, not include outdoor plants to chew and also have water and food. You should always supervise your puppy while outside.

  7. Step 7

Now comes a list of potential hazards in the form of plants. Be careful what you grow and throw away. There will be a link to a list at the end of this article, but some common plants to avoid letting your puppy around include: Aloe Vera, Daffodil, Elephant Ears, Morning Glory, Tomatoes, Azalea, and many many others. For a more complete list see your vet. Also here we will talk about Antifreeze. Never allow your puppy any access to this product. Dogs in general like the taste of Antifreeze and will drink it, and die. Garages are off limits to the puppy.

  • Puppies should be supervised at all times when out of their immediate living area.
