  • 2 large mixing bowls
  • Mixing spoons
  • Baking sheets
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1 1/2 cups boiling water
  • 2 tbsp. active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 3 eggs
  • 7 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • Rolling pin
  • 2 1/2-inch biscuit cutter

Instructions

      Combine shortening, sugar and salt in a large mixing bowl. Slowly stir in the boiling water. Allow mixture to cool until it reaches room temperature.

      Dissolve yeast into warm water in a large mixing bowl. Set aside.

      Add eggs and 3 cups of flour to yeast mixture. Mix together well. Add to the shortening mixture.

      Stir in the remaining flour slowly until you form a soft dough. Flour a flat surface. Knead the dough until it is smooth and has the consistency of elastic. Place in a greased bowl. Flip over the dough to grease both sides of the dough. Cover and allow to rise until double in size.

      Squash down the dough. Remove the dough from the bowl. Place it on a lightly floured surface. Roll out the dough to 1/2 inch thickness. Cut with a 2 1/2-inch biscuit cutter. Fold the circles in half and press together to seal.

      Place on greased baking sheets 2 inches apart. Cover and allow to rise until double in size. Bake in the oven at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the pans. Place on wire racks and brush with butter.
