Cleaning office carpeting is not much different than cleaning your carpet at home. The difference is office carpeting has heavier traffic lines where people walk back and forth all day. The carpet in these areas gets flattened and the dirt is ground in. Most offices have the carpet professionally cleaned at certain intervals, but there are steps you can take to keep the carpeting looking great between professional cleanings.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Vacuum the carpet each evening as the last person leaves. This will keep most dirt from getting ground into the carpet. Use a good vacuum that has enough power to pull up the pile of the carpet after it has been walked on each day.

  2. Step 2

Spot clean spills or very dirty spots as they happen. Use a quality carpet shampoo or foam cleaner and place on the stains. Blot with a rag or use a scrub brush for stubborn stains. Then place a clean rag on the carpet over the area and step on it to extract any liquid left in the carpet. Allow the area to dry before anyone walks on it.

  3. Step 3

Clean the carpet with a steam cleaner once a month. This should be done on a Friday evening if the office is closed for the weekend. This way no one will be walking on the carpet for a couple of days and it will have time to dry. Vacuum the area well before using a steam cleaner. Pretreat the heavy walkway before using the carpet cleaner. This area may have to be gone over a few times to get it really clean.

  4. Step 4

Have the carpet professionally cleaned at least twice a year. The time of year should depend on the climate the office is in. If you're in an area that has a rainy season or snowy season, it should be done as soon as that season is over and right before it starts. This is when people will be tracking in the most dirt and moisture onto the carpet.
