How to Calculate Video RAM
If you need to do a lot of video work on your computer, you might decide someday that you need to switch out your video card, either because it is insufficient or defective. But to do this, you should first determine just how much video RAM you will need on your card. This kind of RAM is not related to the regular RAM, which the computer uses for various purposes. Video RAM is a part of the video card and is especially devoted to handling video. If you want to determine just how much video RAM you need, the process is quite simple.

1
Right-click on your desktop and from the options, select "Properties." Then click on the "Settings" tab. Write down your screen resolution and your color quality bit setting. It might be 1280 x 1024 with the bit setting at 16.
-
2
Multiply the height and width resolution numbers. In the example above, this gives us 1280 x 1024 = 1310720.
-
-
3
Divide the bit color by 8. Again, this would mean that a bit color of 16 ÷ 8 = 2.
-
4
Multiply the results from Step 2 by the results from Step 3. Since 1310720 x 2 = 2621440, in the example, you would need a card with 3 MB of RAM or better.
