Instructions

    • 1

Study the costumes of the movie from which you would like to make costumes. Watch the movie on your DVD player and notice how the fabric moves, how it fits the person's body, and pause and zoom in to get a clearer idea of the type of fabric used.

    • 2

Draw sketches of the costume onto a sketchpad, or find screen caps or photos of the costume on the Internet and print them out for reference. Draw or print the costume from different angles, so that you have a clear model of what each side of the costume should look like.

    • 3

Plan your design by determining what fabric to use and how to sew it together. Your re-creation does not have to be exactly like the original. You may use another type of fabric and another sewing scheme if you wish, so long as the duplicate resembles the original.

    • 4

Use a tape measure to take your measurements. Measure your waist, hips, bust, arms and thighs, and ensure that you hold the tape measure parallel to the ground to obtain an accurate measurement. Hold the tape measure firmly to your skin, but do not squeeze or dig it into your skin.

    • 5

Cut your fabric accordingly to fit your measurements and proceed to sew the pieces of your costume together, referring to your sketches or printout for design reference.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can purchase many popular costume patterns online. Use a dress form corresponding to your body size to aid in costume creation.

  • Depending upon the difficulty of your chosen design, some costumes may take weeks or months to create.
