Tricare Prime is a comprehensive and affordable medical insurance plan for active duty military, military retirees and their family members. Tricare Standard is a fee-for-service insurance plan offered through Tricare; it has higher out-of-pocket expenses for deductibles and copayments than Tricare Prime, but the insured can be more selective in their choice of medical providers. Tricare Standard policyholders may see either in-network or out-of-network providers for medical services. Switching from Tricare Prime to Standard is only an application form away; once you complete the necessary paperwork, the switch from Tricare Prime to Standard takes a matter of days.
