An In-Progress RPG Maker Game

RPGs are a genre of video games that has roots in traditional American table-top games such as Dungeons and Dragons. RPGs commonly feature stat-based gameplay, heavy emphasis on character customization and turn-based battles, though variations on the genre have become increasingly popular, with RPG elements now often appearing in first-person shooters and action games such as Bioshock, Dead Rising and Fallout 3. While RPGs generally feature extensive development time and sky-high budgets, simpler entries in the genre can be constructed by anyone with access to a PC and the RPG Maker program.

Download the RPG Maker program. A free trial of RPG Maker can be downloaded from various online sources, such as CNet. Install the program into any desired directory.

    • 2

Start RPG Maker. Select the 'Project' tab on the upper-left of the screen and choose to create a new project. Choose a game name and target directory.

Build environments using the included chipsets. These are collections of sprites and tiles that will build the in-game world. Simply select an object and placing it by clicking on a corresponding square. Chipsets can be edited or made from scratch using photo editing software.

Right-click to script events in RPG Maker and choose the action you wish the object or character to perform. Scripting allows certain properties of tiles to be changed, such as enabling the player to walk through water, or a number of other functions, including making non-playable characters speak and move.

Save and export the completed game by using the 'File' tab. Share the game online or play for your own enjoyment.
