How to Read a Power Tab

Many beginners find it much easier to learn how to play the guitar using a system called guitar tablature. Power Tab is a popular software application for this purpose. Unlike other guitar tablatures, Power Tab includes the music above the tablature, which will allow you to begin to read music faster. Especially for those interested in a music career, it is important to not become dependent on the Power Tab software and learn how to read music on their own.

Instructions

    • 1

Download the Power Tab software (see Resources).

    • 2

Notice that each of the six lines of the tablature represent the six strings on the guitar. The bottom line represents the lowest string, E, the second line represents the A string and so on.

    • 3

Note that the numbers in the middle of the strings represent which fret you should play. For example, if it has a "7" in the middle of the third string, you would play the third string using the seventh fret. A "0" indicates to play the string open (with no fingers on the frets).

    • 4

Read chords in the same way, but note that they appear as chords when they are stacked vertically to indicate to play the notes together. Play the notes of the chord separately when they are not stacked vertically.

    • 5

Use the music that is given in Power Tab to read the rhythm, or simply listen to the music to get an idea of how the music goes rhythmically.
