How to Remove Self-Adhesive Vinyl

The technique for removing self-adhesive vinyl lining wood or metal drawers is different than removing self-adhesive vinyl from drywall or plaster.       Remove all items from shelves and from inside drawers. Wipe any dust or dirt from the self-adhesive vinyl.

      Start removal the vinyl at one corner. Heat a small area about 6 in. square. Use the plastic scraper to get under the edge of the vinyl and begin pulling it up as you warm the area. Take your time and thoroughly warm each area before pulling on it. Fold the sticky part of the vinyl over itself to keep it from adhering again.

      Apply the glue removal product and allow it to sit on the surface for three to five minutes. Use the plastic scraper to remove as much of the adhesive as possible, then scrub with the plastic scrubber. Wipe up any residue with rags. Clean the surface with soap and water and allow to dry before installing new shelf paper.

      Remove self-adhesive vinyl from drywall by heating and pulling the vinyl off the wall. Be careful not to damage the drywall's paper covering and not to gouge the surface of the drywall with the scraper. Use the glue removal product and the plastic scrubber to remove any remaining glue. Wash the wall and allow to dry before painting or applying wallpaper.
