You can make your own papier mache mask to complement a costume or to hang as a piece of art. 1
Choose a bowl that is similar in size to your face; a bowl without a lip on the bottom for stability works best. Lay it upside down on a covered work surface and wrap it in plastic food wrap.
-
2
Tear newspaper into 1 inch by 3 inch strips, approximately. Set nearby so you can easily reach them.
-
-
3
Mix 1 part flour to 1 part water in a large mixing bowl. It should be creamy but still pour easily.
-
4
Dip strips of newspaper into the flour mixture and lay them on the plastic covered bowl. Overlap each strip slightly and smooth in place with your fingertips. Wad up pieces of wet newspaper to make lips, eyebrows, and other features then add two more layers of strips over the entire mask. Set aside to dry for 24 to 48 hours.
-
5
Remove the mask from the bowl and pull out the plastic wrap. Trim the sides if necessary with a utility knife and cut eye holes.
-
6
Paint and decorate the mask as desired. Staple an elastic string to the mask if you wish to wear it.
