How to Set Up a Pull Up Bar
Pull-ups are among the best exercises for achieving upper-body fitness. This exercise works by using your own body weight to increase strength and range of motion. As a result, the entire torso benefits. The pull-up bar itself can be made in several different ways. Below is one method for setting up a stationary bar that is erected outside. This rather basic piece of fitness equipment will become a primary component in your personal fitness regime. If you start this project early in the weekend, you can begin using the pull-up bar by Monday. This project should be performed with at least one other person helping you.
Things You'll Need
- Shovel
- Yardstick or meter stick
- 2 90-degree threaded elbow pipe joints (1-inch diameter on one side, 2 inches on the other)
- 4-foot-long threaded pipe, 1 inch wide (must fit into the elbow joints)
- 2 7-foot-long threaded pipes, 2 inches wide (must fit into the elbow joints)
- Fast-drying cement (or Quikrete)
- 4 to 8 cement blocks
Instructions
-

1
Use your shovel to dig two holes that measure up to 3 feet deep and are about 4 feet apart. Each hole should be about 12 inches in diameter. If you have ample cement, this can be increased to 18 inches for added stability.
-
2
Take the 4-foot-long threaded pipe and fasten the elbow joints to either end.
-
-
3
Attach one of the 2-inch-wide, 7-foot-long pipes to each elbow joint. The structure should now look like an upside down "U." Set the structure aside for a moment.
-
4
Mix the cement according to directions. Lower the bar into the holes and pour cement around the base of the pipes, filling the holes. Place the cement blocks around the base of the filled holes to hold them in place while the cement in them sets.
-
5
Allow the structure to dry and cure for up to 48 hours before use. You can remove the cement blocks or leave them in place. Once the cement is dry, they won't be necessary.
