How to Use the Serial Port on a Viewsat Ultra

Using the DB9 serial port on the back of your Viewsat Ultra, you can keep your Ultra up to date with the latest firmware upgrades--which update things like tuning, scanning and the user interface, and which work out bugs and kinks from previous firmware releases. Uploading firmware upgrades is easy to do by following a few steps.

      Insert one end of the DB9 serial cable into the serial port on the back of your Viewsat Ultra in the bottom left corner. Connect the opposite end of the serial cable into a serial port on the back of your computer.

      Open your computer's web browser and navigate to Viewsat's Support and Drivers page. Click on the download link adjacent to the heading "PVR 7000 and Ultra Loader v1.1 - Firmware Updater ( serial)." Save the file to your computer.

      Unzip the firmware updater file--you may need to install software to unzip the file (see Resource Three). Click on the executable (setup file) file wizard--extracted from the zip file--to launch the installation. complete the installation wizard and then launch the program.

      Download a copy of the "VS Ultra Factory Bin File" firmware file to your computer. Create a new folder on your desktop and copy the firmware file into it. Extract the firmware file into the folder.

      Click on the "Connect" button in the VSPRO/Ultra Loader Tool. Give the loader and serial cable a few seconds to sync.

      Click on the "File" header and select "Upload STB" from the list of options. Use the explorer window that appears to locate the folder you created and extracted the firmware zip file into. Select the firmware file (e.g. VIEWSAT_ULTRA_V0146.PGM), and then click "Open."

      Click the button labeled "Upload to STB" to start uploading the firmware upgrade to your Viewsat Ultra.
