How to Design Whimsical Logos
Whether you're designing a whimsical logo for your company or a children's room, one thing must remain throughout: a touch of playfulness. As you design this logo, think back to your childhood or your favorite story while growing up. "Alice in Wonderland" is often pegged as a whimsical story, so you can watch the movie or read the book to draw inspiration.

Think about where you will place your company's name, if designing a logo for one. You will want this to be apparent and not hidden within the design. Start by writing this on a piece of paper. You may want to use a whimsical font from the Internet and then print out your word and trace it onto the paper.

Drawing on inspiration from children's stories or colorful ideas, start making a sketch around your wording. Some ideas include themes from such stories as "The Wizard of Oz" or teddy bears, flowers or generally colorful art that doesn't have to make sense. You'll want to make a fairly simple sketch, such as one or two objects, so as not to make the logo too busy.

Embellish your sketch by including, for example, lines behind butterflies or fire coming out of a dragon's mouth. Again, be careful not to go too crazy with this, since you'll want your wording to be extremely visible.

Using your colored pencils, color your design. You may want to photocopy your design in black-and-white so you can play with different colors and talk with others involved about which colors they think would look best. However, the best logos are also just as effective and recognizable without color.

Once you've decided on your final idea, scan it into your computer or take it to be copied in full color. From there, you can put your design into a photo editing software program to spruce it up. Begin to think of ways to put your logo on T-shirts or stickers (cafepress.com offers a great and easy step-by-step way to do this).

Tips & Warnings
Draw your first design at a size you feel comfortable with. You can always blow it up or make it smaller later.
