How to Remove Shimano Freehubs

The freehub is an axle assembly most commonly found on the rear wheel of a bicycle.   • Lockring tool
  • Adjustable wrench
  • 10 mm Allen key

Instructions

    • 1

      Wrap the chain whip around the second-largest sprocket, or set of teeth.

      Insert the lockring tool into the lockring--the hole running down the center of the hub--and the wrench securely over the hexagon fitting of the lockring tool.

      Hold the chain whip steady, and turn the wrench counter-clockwise to loosen the lockring until it can be removed.

      Remove the cassette from the freehub.

    • 5

      Insert the Allen key into the freehub.

    • 6

      Turn the key counterclockwise until the hub is loose enough to be removed.
