How to Refill an Epson Stylus 740 Ink Cartridge

You can save yourself time and money by refilling the ink cartridges on your Epson Stylus 740 printer. By injecting new ink into the cartridges, you can get three or four more uses out of them before you'll need to replace them completely. If you refill the cartridges before they completely run out, you can get even more life out of them. It is very simple to refill a black ink cartridge, since it has only one color. With a color cartridge, you must refill the right chamber with the right color, ensuring that you don't overfill the chambers.

Instructions

    • 1

Tape over the outlet holes at the bottom of the ink cartridge using adhesive tape to prevent ink from leaking out during refilling.

    • 2

Use a sewing needle to poke a hole in the cartridge label above each ink chamber (if it is a color cartridge) to test which color ink is in each chamber. It should be cyan on the left, magenta in the middle and yellow on the right.

    • 3

Fill a plastic syringe bottle with 5 to 8 milliliters of the color ink you are refilling. Insert the syringe needle into the correct hole in the label (if this is a black cartridge, poke the hole with the needle). Slowly inject the ink into the chamber.

    • 4

Run warm water through the syringe to wash out all ink residue, even if you have no more ink to refill. If you are going to refill another shade of ink, dry the syringe completely before filling it with more ink.

    • 5

Tape over the holes in the cartridge label once the cartridge has been refilled.

    • 6

Insert the cartridge back into the Epson Stylus 740 printer with the tape still over the outlet holes. Run up to three cleaning cycles on the printer. You might need to wait 24 hours before removing the tape to allow the ink to flow to the print head.
